Overview:
Our client, a global manufacturer of advanced safety products for the commercial trucking, bus and trailer industry is expanding its Kansas City engineering staff and has asked Sterling St. James, LLP to help source, screen and qualify top candidates to handle the growth of their product line.
The overview of the position is two fold. As a Design Engineer there is some refinement and modification of existing products and design and development of new products.
The role requires knowledge of technical aspects of selecting and applying appropriate engineering techniques, procedures and criteria to research and develop ideas for new products and production systems. This requires working knowledge of Advanced Product Quality Planning, APQP, conventions and disciplines.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
•Design air control products using analytical tools such as spring design analysis, seal specification analysis, material selection analysis based on performance and endurance criteria, computational flow, material stress, and thermal analysis using FEA software, vibration analysis, dimensional stack up analysis, creation of product
•Facilitate cross functional APQP team meetings and project reviews.
•Apply GD&T principals to product component drawings.
•Coordinate creation of product drawings using company drafting standards.
•Initiate and coordinate continuous improvement projects using PDCA methodology.
•Coordinate and facilitate regular communication to management using A3 summaries.
•Adhere to project objectives, budget, schedules and deadlines.
•Facilitate summarization and documentation of product knowledge through FMEAs, Product Check Sheets, Corrective Action documentation, Things gone right/wrong summaries, and Product Testing documentation.
•Create Design Goals.
•Create and maintain engineering design product, and application standards.
•Create Reliability and Quality Goals.
•Lead creation of Process Flow Chart.
•Create Product Assurance Plan.
•Receive and interpret Customer Requirements.
•Coordinate product bench marking data.
•Lead creation of customer proposal.
•Lead prototype builds and prototype control plan creation.
•Lead processing of Engineering Change Orders (ECO).
•Lead corrective action process (8D, CAPA, etc).
•Coordinate product bench marking activities.
•Coordinate Team Feasibility and commitment and Management support.
•Create and Manage DVP&R test program.
•Lead customer design reviews.
•Lead supplier design reviews.
•Initiate and manage VA / VE improvement projects.
•Create CAD drawings.
•Lead creation of P-diagrams, Boundary Diagrams, Significant Characteristic Development, Prototype Control Plans, Design FMEA, Stack up Analysis, DVP&R inputs.
•Develop / maintain core component standards.
•Perform component and assembly cost analysis.
•Specify / Standardize Materials.
•Interface with Manufacturing functions (internal manufacturing plants, suppliers and customers).
•Lead Design for Manufacturing and Assembly analysis.
•Coordinate approval of supplier PPAP’s (Based on drawing specifications).

Requirements:
Education and/or Experience:
•Bachelor Degree in Engineering (Master degree, MS preferred) from a major accredited University with 2 years of increasingly responsible experience.
•A knowledge of automotive industry (passenger or heavy truck) a plus.
•Demonstrate a good understanding of engineering principles, theories, and techniques; an understanding of manufacturing processes and construction methods. An awareness of the environmental impact of design ideas is essential.
•Must have good written and oral communication skills.
